Studies have shown that parabens—a main ingredient in a large majority of cosmetics – may cause a disruption to the endocrine system. In addition, there are a whole list of others that are potential carcinogens:
Sodium lauryl sulfate: a degreasing ingredient, often used to clean car engines. Gives skin that squeaky clean feeling.
BHA and BHT are common preservatives in moisturizers. Both chemicals are suspected carcinogens.
Petroleum. Will clog your skin and is toxic for you and the environment. Also known as petrolatum, xylene, toluene, mineral oil, and liquid paraffin.
The E.U. has banned around 1400 of these ingredients from personal care products, and the U.S. has only banned 30.
