Enemy ingredients. These are chemicals used in personal care products that could have a harmful effect on our health and could be toxic to the environment. It really angers me that any chemist would even consider putting an ingredient or chemical into a product that could pose a threat to our health or the environment. I was sickened when I researched ingredients and found so many harmful ones in personal care products. Even children’s products.
What concerns me is the outcome from many of these chemicals and their impact on our health. No one discusses this with young women and young men. The growing numbers of girls that can’t get pregnant concern me. Could it be from chemicals that they are exposed to from personal care products? Many of these chemicals have not been studied to see if they could harm ovaries, eggs, or sperm. What are the effects of these chemicals on women who are pregnant? Could this overload of chemical exposure have an effect on the embryo and child development in utero? I haven’t been able to find research on these ingredients that show this type of testing.
Within 37 seconds what you put on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream- we call this transepidermal delivery. It’s why many medications are now being delivered into the body using patches that remain on the skin.
Ingredients like Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Hydroquinone, the Sulfates, Ethanolamines (DEA, MEA, TEA), Octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC), Acrylates, Glycolic Acid (Synthetic), Formaldehydes (BHT, DMDM Hydantoin), and the Parabens should really be avoided by everyone. Don’t take my word for it. Look it up for yourself. The MSDS sheets on these chemicals reveal what the chemical really is. After reading those sheets, you will understand the concern with a new group of cosmetic formulators. Those of us avoiding the use of these chemicals are formulating products with natural, organic ingredients.
When I was creating a formula wanting to regenerate the skin I requested a sample of Glycolic Acid. When it arrived to me it was a 4 oz. jar in a huge box. The 4oz. jar was wrapped in 15 layers of thick bubble wrap. The inner layer of the wrap had warning labels on it. Avoid contact with the skin. Do not inhale. Use in a well ventilated area. I was stunned. This is an ingredient found in a majority of skin care products and these warning labels are telling me “BEWARE”.
I found a company that supplies us with natural sugar cane extract, not the synthetic Glycolic Acid, which is less expensive to use. Using the natural sugar cane extract we often have to adjust the formulas because there are times where the extract is not as strong as the previous batch. But we are willing to take the time to make these adjustments.
